Rail yards, a lake port and polar-vortex cold in Chicago

Serving Cook County

Chicago’s fuel demand starts with freight rail. According to the CREATE program, one-fourth of the nation’s freight rail traffic moves to, from or through Chicago. BNSF’s Corwith Intermodal Facility covers nearly a square mile in Brighton Park. Norfolk Southern runs four intermodal terminals in the city, including 47th Street off I-90/94. Every container that comes off a train goes onto a drayage tractor. The hostlers, cranes and reach stackers that move them burn fuel around the clock.

The Port of Chicago sits on the Southeast Side, across Lake Calumet Harbor and Iroquois Landing. It moves steel, lumber, petroleum and sugar. Bulk handling means loaders, cranes and port trucks that are easier to fuel where they work.

Guinness recognized the Lakeside Technology Center at 350 East Cermak as the largest data center in a single building. Data centers back up utility power with diesel standby generators.

Polar vortex cold

On January 30, 2019, O’Hare hit -23°F, breaking the daily record. Amtrak suspended all trains that day. In that cold, untreated diesel gels, filters plug and equipment parked outside won’t start. Settle fuel treatment and blend before the first hard freeze. See diesel gelling temperatures and preventing diesel gelling. Water in a tank freezes before the diesel does, so polish stored fuel in the fall.

Mobile fueling or bulk delivery: which fits your Chicago site?

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.
Best for: Data centers, large industrial sites, agriculture and rail yards.

Chicago fuel delivery questions, answered

Can you fuel yard tractors and drayage trucks near the South Side rail yards?
Yes. We wet-hose yard tractors, drayage trucks and equipment where they park, including around the South and Southwest Side intermodal terminals. Fueling on site keeps hostlers out of the station line between lifts.
How do you keep diesel from gelling in a Chicago winter?
Talk to dispatch before the first hard freeze about the fuel blend for your equipment and how it's stored. Water and wax are what cause problems in a tank at -20°F, so we also offer fuel polishing and lab testing for tanks that have sat since summer. Our guide to preventing diesel gelling covers the basics.
Do you deliver generator fuel to Chicago data centers?
Yes. We deliver diesel for standby generators and bulk tanks, with transport loads up to 7,500 gallons for large sites and scheduled top-offs ahead of winter storms.
Do you serve the Lake Calumet and Iroquois Landing port areas?
Yes. We deliver diesel, DEF and gasoline to terminal operators, steel and bulk handlers, and the trucking fleets that serve the Southeast Side.
Do you deliver fuel 24/7 in Chicago?
Yes. FuelGo dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call 800-720-4546 any time, or request a quote online and a dispatcher replies within the hour.
What fuels can you deliver in Chicago?

Do you offer mobile fleet fueling in Chicago?

Can you deliver bulk diesel to our tanks in Chicago?

How much fuel can you deliver at once?
Tank wagon deliveries run from 20 to 4,400 gallons per drop, and full transport loads to 7,500 gallons or more for large bulk tanks. Tell us your tank size and usage and we’ll recommend the right format.
How much is diesel tax in Illinois?
On-road (clear) diesel in Illinois carries $0.8173 per gallon in combined federal and state taxes and fees, and off-road (dyed) diesel $0.0163 per gallon, as of October 5, 2026. Sales and local taxes are extra where they apply. Using dyed diesel on public roads is illegal. See diesel taxes by state →
Do you offer emergency fuel delivery in Chicago?
Yes. If a generator is running low or a site is about to run dry, call 800-720-4546 and a dispatcher will confirm what we can get to you and when.
Can you set up recurring scheduled deliveries?
Yes. Most customers start with a one-time delivery and move to a recurring schedule, so tanks, generators and fleets are topped up before they run low, without anyone having to call it in.
Do you rent fuel tanks?
Yes. We rent diesel and gasoline tanks from 119 to 17,000 gallons, with pumps, meters and hose fitted, and refills on a schedule. See our fuel tank rental page for sizes.
Do you have smaller trucks for tight sites?
Yes. Smaller delivery trucks reach tight urban sites, parking structures and jobsites where a full-size tanker can’t fit.
What payment options do you accept?
Credit cards, ACH and checks. Credit terms are available for qualifying commercial accounts. Ask your dispatcher for details.
