One refinery, a hazmat-free tunnel and deep cold in Denver

Serving City and County of Denver

Denver’s fuel story starts in Commerce City, on the city’s northern edge. Suncor’s refinery there is the only petroleum refinery in Colorado. In 2021, the EIA says, it supplied 25% of distillate sales across the entire Rocky Mountain region.

In December 2022, the cold took it offline. On the afternoon of December 21, the temperature at DIA dropped 37 degrees in one hour. By the next morning Denver was at -24°F. The refinery, damaged by the extreme cold, shut down on December 24. Repairs delayed operations until the end of the first quarter of 2023. The region drew on inventories and fuel from out-of-state refineries.

That’s the lesson for Denver operators. When one plant supplies that much of the region’s diesel, the fuel already in your tank is your buffer.

Fuel can’t take the tunnel

West of Denver, I-70 climbs into the mountains, and fuel trucks follow different rules. Placarded loads, including diesel and gasoline tankers, aren’t allowed through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels. They go over Loveland Pass on US 6 instead. When winter weather closes the pass, CDOT holds hazmat vehicles and escorts them through the tunnel, usually at the top of the hour. For a high-country job site, that adds time to every delivery. Plan bigger drops and more storage on site.

Mobile fueling or bulk delivery: which fits your Denver site?

Three delivery formats. We’ll quote whichever fits your volume, site access and cost target.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
Overnight or day shift, fuel direct to each tank
A driver pulls into your yard after hours, fuels every truck or piece of equipment directly, logs each fill, and clears out before your crews arrive. No staff required on site.
Best for: Trucking fleets, delivery yards, rental fleets and service vehicles.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · same-day or scheduled
A smaller delivery truck fills your day tank, jobsite bulk tank or generator. The flexible option when volume varies or site access is tight.
Best for: Construction sites, generator refills, day tanks and smaller bulk storage.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Full transport loads to 7,500+ gallons · scheduled
Tractor-trailer delivery straight into large bulk storage. The lowest cost per gallon for high-volume buyers.
Best for: Data centers, large industrial sites, agriculture and rail yards.

Denver fuel delivery questions, answered

What happens to diesel supply in Denver if the Suncor refinery goes down again?
The region falls back on inventories and on product brought in from out-of-state refineries, which is what happened in early 2023. The practical defense is storage: a site tank kept full on a schedule, so a supply squeeze does not become a work stoppage. We can set up scheduled on-site delivery and tank rentals.
Can you deliver fuel to job sites up the I-70 mountain corridor from Denver?
Talk to dispatch about the site and timing. Placarded fuel loads can't go through the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels; they use Loveland Pass (US 6), or wait for CDOT's escorted runs through the tunnel when the pass is closed. That affects delivery windows in winter.
When should Denver fleets switch to winter-blend diesel?
Before the first arctic front, not after it. On December 21, 2022 the temperature at DIA fell 37 degrees in one hour. Fuel that was fine at lunch can gel in equipment parked outside overnight.
Do you deliver fuel 24/7 in Denver?
Yes. FuelGo dispatch runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and holidays. Call 800-720-4546 any time, or request a quote online and a dispatcher replies within the hour.
What fuels can you deliver in Denver?
Clear on-road diesel (ULSD #2), red-dyed off-road diesel, gasoline, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and R99 renewable diesel. Most customers combine two or more on the same delivery.
Do you deliver diesel to generators in Denver?
Yes. Dyed diesel for standby and prime generators, on a refill schedule or as an emergency run during an outage. Generator fueling →
Do you offer mobile fleet fueling in Denver?
Yes. We wet-hose trucks and equipment in your yard, usually overnight, and log every gallon by unit. Mobile fleet fueling →
Can you deliver bulk diesel to our tanks in Denver?
Yes. Anything from 20 gallons to a 7,500-gallon transport load, into above-ground, underground or portable tanks. Bulk delivery →
How much fuel can you deliver at once?
Tank wagon deliveries run from 20 to 4,400 gallons per drop, and full transport loads to 7,500 gallons or more for large bulk tanks. Tell us your tank size and usage and we’ll recommend the right format.
How much is diesel tax in Colorado?
On-road (clear) diesel in Colorado carries $0.6050 per gallon in combined federal and state taxes and fees, and off-road (dyed) diesel $0.0270 per gallon, as of October 5, 2026. Sales and local taxes are extra where they apply. Using dyed diesel on public roads is illegal. See diesel taxes by state →
Do you offer emergency fuel delivery in Denver?
Yes. If a generator is running low or a site is about to run dry, call 800-720-4546 and a dispatcher will confirm what we can get to you and when.
Can you set up recurring scheduled deliveries?
Yes. Most customers start with a one-time delivery and move to a recurring schedule, so tanks, generators and fleets are topped up before they run low, without anyone having to call it in.
Do you rent fuel tanks?
Yes. We rent diesel and gasoline tanks from 119 to 17,000 gallons, with pumps, meters and hose fitted, and refills on a schedule. See our fuel tank rental page for sizes.
Do you have smaller trucks for tight sites?
Yes. Smaller delivery trucks reach tight urban sites, parking structures and jobsites where a full-size tanker can’t fit.
What payment options do you accept?
Credit cards, ACH and checks. Credit terms are available for qualifying commercial accounts. Ask your dispatcher for details.
