A seaport, an airport and a rail hub inside one city line

Newark's east side is a freight machine. Port Newark sits on Newark Bay, where Port Newark Container Terminal works the Newark side of the Port of New York and New Jersey. The port handled 8.7 million TEUs in 2024. Behind the docks, Oak Island Yard in the Ironbound is Conrail's hub for North Jersey, and ExpressRail Newark loads containers straight onto CSX trains. Every box that moves through them is pulled by a drayage tractor, lifted by yard equipment or switched by a locomotive, and all of it burns diesel.

Those drayage tractors have a DEF problem built in. Since July 2023, trucks registering for Port Authority marine terminals need engines that meet 2014 federal emissions standards. In practice that means SCR aftertreatment on nearly every diesel tractor, and SCR runs on DEF. We wet-hose drayage and box-truck fleets in their yards overnight, top up DEF on the same visit, and log every gallon by unit, so trucks leave for the terminal full instead of detouring to a truck stop between turns.

West of the port, the demand changes shape. The Port Authority's $3.5 billion AirTrain Newark replacement started guideway work in January 2026 and won't carry passengers until 2030, so excavators, cranes and light towers will be on site for years. Downtown, 165 Halsey Street, is a 1.2 million sq ft carrier hotel with more than 60 networks, and it advertises a full basement for fuel tanks. University Hospital in University Heights is northern New Jersey's only Level I trauma center. Each of those runs on standby generators, and standby generators run on fuel that has to be checked and refilled before an outage, not during one.

What we deliver in Newark, down to the spec

The grades port operators, contractors and facility managers ask for by name. Mixed sites get each product as its own line item.

ULSD
On-road · Clear

Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel #2 (Clear)

ASTM D975, 15 ppm sulfur max, highway tax included. For drayage tractors, box trucks and anything registered to run the Turnpike, I-78 or Route 21.

DYED
Off-road · Tax-exempt

Red-Dyed ULSD #2 (Off-Road)

The same ULSD, dyed as a federal tax marker. For yard tractors, cranes, construction equipment, generators and reefer units that draw from their own separate tank. It never goes into a road tractor.

87
Gasoline grades

87 to 93 Octane & Ethanol-Free

Regular through premium (93 where offered) for light fleets, service vans and crew trucks, plus ethanol-free for saws, pumps and small engines on job sites.

R99
Low-carbon drop-in

Renewable Diesel (R99 / HVO)

Meets ASTM D975 and drops into existing engines and tanks. It resists degradation in storage, which suits generator tanks that sit between tests. It isn't stocked at every terminal; where it can't be pulled locally, it ships by rail or barge.

DEF
SCR aftertreatment

DEF, ISO 22241 Certified

32.5% urea for SCR-equipped diesels. Plan on roughly 2 to 3% of your diesel volume. Delivered in jugs, 55-gallon drums, 275 and 330-gallon totes, or bulk tank fills.

WTR
Cold months

Winter-Blended Diesel

Winter blending and additive packages for tanks and equipment that sit outside through a New Jersey winter. Ask dispatch before the first cold snap, not after a filter gels. How to prevent gelling →

Wet-hose, tank wagon or transport load: which fits your Newark site?

Dispatch matches the truck to your storage, your gate and how fast you burn fuel.

Wet-Hose Fueling
Mobile fleet fueling
No minimum · 100 gallons or several thousand · overnight or between shifts
The driver works down the line in your yard and fuels each tractor or machine directly, no storage tank needed. Every gallon is logged by vehicle, time and location.
Best for: Port drayage carriers, Ironbound distribution yards, box-truck and service fleets.
Tank Wagon Delivery
On-site tank fills
20 – 4,400 gallons per drop · scheduled, on demand or monitor-triggered
A smaller truck that fits gated compounds and tight downtown streets. It fills day tanks, sub-base tanks, jobsite skids and rental tanks with metered drops.
Best for: Downtown generators, hospital and carrier-hotel day tanks, AirTrain-area contractors.
Transport Load
Bulk transport delivery
Up to 7,500 gallons per load · scheduled from your consumption
A full tanker for fuel farms and large storage. Fewer trucks through your gate, delivery cost spread across more gallons, and refills timed off real tank levels.
Best for: Terminal and rail-yard storage, waste and recycling plants, large bulk tanks.

All five wards, from Newark Bay to Vailsburg

The port and the Doremus Avenue corridor, the airport district, downtown and University Heights, and the residential wards to the north, south and west.

Where the Turnpike, I-78 and Route 21 meet.

Newark is laid out around the Newark Airport Interchange, where the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), I-78, US 1&9, US 22 and Route 21 come together between the airport and the port. Most of the city's fuel demand sits within a few miles of that junction: terminal yards on Newark Bay, warehouses and rail along Doremus Avenue, and contractor staging around EWR.

Port and terminal sites have their own gate rules. Our drivers carry TWIC credentials for port access, and dispatch confirms gate procedures, fill points and contacts before the truck leaves. A truck that is turned away at the gate costs you a day.

Storm Surge & Flood Readiness
Newark sits low on Newark Bay. Plan your fuel before the water comes.

During Sandy in October 2012, the National Hurricane Center measured 4 to 6 feet of inundation across Newark Bay around Newark Liberty, and about 95 percent of Newark residents were without power the day after. Nine years later, Ida dropped more than 8.4 inches on Newark Airport on September 1, 2021, the wettest day on record there. Sandy's surge came off the bay into the Ironbound; Ida's rain fell on every ward at once. Either way, standby generators carry the load and burn fuel far faster than any test schedule.

  • Top off before the storm: Fill generator and bulk tanks while roads are open, and ask about storm pre-positioning.
  • Get on file now: Gate codes, fill points and contacts recorded in advance turn a 2am call into a dispatch, not an onboarding.
  • Add runtime: A sub-base tank buys hours. Rental tanks from 119 to 17,000 gallons buy days.
  • Check the fuel after the water: Flooding and condensation put water in tanks. We test, polish, clean the tank or pump the fuel out if it can't be saved.

Newark-specific questions, answered

Can your trucks get into Port Newark terminals and yards?
Our drivers carry TWIC credentials for port access. Tell dispatch which terminal or yard, the gate you use and any appointment or escort rules, and we confirm them before the truck leaves. For drayage fleets, the simplest setup is usually wet-hosing in your own yard overnight, when the tractors are parked.
Do you supply DEF for port drayage trucks?
Yes. Since July 2023, trucks registering for Port Authority marine terminals need engines that meet 2014 federal emissions standards, and nearly all of those run SCR on DEF. We deliver ISO 22241 DEF in jugs, drums, totes or bulk on the same visit as your diesel. Plan on roughly 2 to 3% of your diesel volume.
Do you deliver around Newark Liberty International Airport?
Yes, to contractor sites, fleet yards and equipment around EWR. Long projects like the $3.5 billion AirTrain replacement, with first passenger service expected in 2030, usually run best on a rental tank plus scheduled dyed diesel drops. For airside work, tell dispatch who controls access and what escort is required.
Can you fuel generators in downtown high-rises and data centers?
Yes. Tank wagons are small enough for downtown streets and loading docks, and we fill day tanks, sub-base tanks and auxiliary tanks. For data centers and carrier hotels we set up a keep-full program with tank monitoring and itemized delivery records for audits. See fueling a rooftop generator.
How should we prepare for a storm like Sandy or Ida?
Top off generator and bulk tanks while the roads are open, and ask about storm pre-positioning. Get your site on file now, with gate codes, fill points and contacts, so a call during an outage becomes a dispatch instead of an onboarding. If your sub-base tank only buys hours, add a rental tank from 119 to 17,000 gallons.
What if floodwater got into our fuel tank?
Don't start the generator on it and hope. We test the fuel and polish it to strip out water and sediment, clean the tank itself, or pump the fuel out when it can't be saved and refill with fresh dyed diesel, clear diesel or R99 on the same account.
Can reefer units at our Newark yard run dyed diesel?
Yes, if the reefer unit draws from its own separate tank. Dyed diesel can never go into the tractor's tank. A shared fill point or a reefer that draws from the truck's tank needs clear diesel. We deliver both on the same visit and invoice them as separate line items.
What ZIP codes do you serve in Newark?
All of Newark, including 07102, 07103, 07104, 07105, 07106, 07107, 07108, 07112 and 07114, plus neighboring Harrison, Kearny, Elizabeth and East Orange. FuelGo delivers across all 50 states, so sites outside the city are covered too.
How quickly can you deliver in Newark?
A dispatcher replies within the hour with a realistic delivery window for your site. Dispatch runs 24/7/365, and scheduled routes can run overnight or between shifts. For emergencies, call 800-720-4546 rather than using the form.
Is there a minimum order or a contract?
No minimum delivery and no contract. Wet-hose service scales from one truck at 100 gallons to a full yard at several thousand. Pay by credit card, ACH or check.
Can we get R99 renewable diesel in Newark?
Yes. R99 isn't stocked at every terminal; where it can't be pulled locally, it ships by rail or barge, so confirm lead time with dispatch. It drops into existing engines and tanks and comes with documentation for sustainability reporting.
How is fuel delivery priced in Newark?
Price depends on fuel grade, volume and delivery format. Bulk accounts can use index (OPIS) pricing: the published price plus an agreed margin. Dyed diesel runs below clear by roughly the highway tax. Send the site and volume and a dispatcher replies within the hour with a price.
How much is diesel tax in New Jersey?
On-road (clear) diesel in New Jersey carries $0.8098 per gallon in combined federal and state taxes and fees, and off-road (dyed) diesel $0.0058 per gallon, as of October 5, 2026. Sales and local taxes are extra where they apply. Using dyed diesel on public roads is illegal. See diesel taxes by state →
